Oven roasted haagalkayi chips

All of us love crispy, salty and savoury snacks, don’t we? I love finding oven roasted snacks to make it interesting and yet keep them less in calories. Some examples include beetroot and potato skin crisps, roasted mung dal, bakery style roasted peanuts. So you get the drift, we are going towards a simple, healthy, oven roasted snack for today’s recipe, oven roasted haagalkayi chips.
Oven roasted haagalkayi chips are easily made with some tender haagalkayi/bitter gourd/karela. Scoop out the seeds, slice them, lightly oil and add your favourite masalas. All you then need to do is spread them evenly on a baking sheet/tray roast them off. All the fun and no calories and surprisingly they do not have any bitter flavour.


I love keeping it simple for these haagalkayi chips but you can add any of your favourite masalas you like. Also refer to the notes to see how you can deep fry them. Ingredients
  • 2-3 tender haagalkayi/bitter gourd/karela
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ Tsp sugar
  • ¼ Tsp red chilli powder
  • ¼ Tsp turmeric
  • 1 Tsp oil
Method
  1. Wash, peel and scoop out the seeds from the bitter gourd carefully
  2. Slice the haagalkayi thinly and add to a bowl, add all the masalas, slat, sugar, red chilli powder and turmeric
  3. Add little oil and mix well
  4. Spread onto a baking sheet evenly
  5. Roast in a pre-heated oven at 200 Deg C for 15-20 minutes or depending on the oven you have, check after every 5 minutes
  6. Remove when crisp and serve
Notes
You can also deep fry the chips, add a Tsp of besan or rice flour to get some binding

Adjust the masalas as per your taste

Ensure the haagalkayi/bitter gourd/karela is tender and not ripe or hard

Oven Roasted Haagalkayi Chips Stepwise:
Wash, peel and scoop out the seeds from the bitter gourd carefully
    
Slice the haagalkayi thinly and add to a bowl, add all the masalas, slat, sugar, red chilli powder and turmeric

Add little oil and mix well

Spread onto a baking sheet evenly
 
Roast in a pre-heated oven at 200 Deg C for 15-20 minutes or depending on the oven you have, check after every 5 minutes

Remove when crisp and serve
