In Indian cuisine, turmeric plays a very important part. The bright yellow coloured root is usually available in the form of a powder which is used as a spice in cooking. ‘Curcumin’ the main nutrient in turmeric is a known anti-inflammatory agent. Turmeric root is also a very useful cooking ingredient, it can be used in soup broths, chutneys or in this turmeric ginger pickle (haldi adrak achar).
Turmeric ginger pickle is nothing but chopped raw turmeric and ginger root pickled with salt and lemon juice. I have added saunf here to give it a Gujarati tinge and it works very well in this turmeric ginger pickle. Always ensure to make pickles in a clean and dry environment. Humble and simple, mosaru avalakki, or dahi poha, Shri Krishna Janmashtami special

A must have dish, mosaru avalakki for Shri Krishna Janmashtami along with some some fresh butter churned up for ‘muddu’ (beloved) Shri Krishna. Fun snacks offered are such as kodubale, benne muruku, chakli, kobbri mithai, 7 Cups barfi, kalakand. But the most simple and humble dish required on the day is ‘mosaru avalakki’ or dahi poha.
You can choose to add some simple tadka/vaggarne ingredients to make it extra tasty. But in general you can even it keep it plain and quickly mix this up. After eating oily snacks a few spoonfuls of this mosaru avalakki is indeed cooling. The quality of a meal almost entirely depends on the side dishes and condiments that are served with it. They pretty much define your food! For a typical South Indian everyday lunch it will have saaru/rasams like menasina saaru (pepper rasam), carrot saaru and sambars like sorekayi kootu, Mangalore southekayi sambar. It is a fact that most people love chaats be it South or North India. Like so many varieties in different kinds of dishes all over India, chaats are also prepared and eaten in various ways. It is savoured by everyone and making it, in itself is a big celebration amongst many households. Even parties take place featuring chaat as the main theme. Sev puri chaat has crisp papdis or flattened pani puri’ puris. Of course the main feature of any chaat is the sweet and spicy chutneys. They make chaats really tangy and all the lipsmacking goodness comes from there.

A glass of majjige or chaas is what one needs in sweltering heat. It is like a lifeline to the parched throat. The coolness of watery majjige is very good for the gut and has a cooling effect on your body. Very simple to make, all it takes is a little set plain curd/yogurt and little salt. You can add chopped coriander and a little tadka for some extra flavour.
Majjige also aids in digestion and is made throughout India and called by different names. It is usually given as an after meal drink or served for festivals like Ram Navami. Curd/yogurt is beaten/churned till it turns even and then lot of water is added so it becomes watery. Panaka is a refreshing drink made with fresh lemon juice and it is generally sweetened with sugar. But this authentic cooling beverage is made from jaggery to result in a very nice bellada panaka. Peaches are fuzzy fruits, so soft and cute. They are bright, colourful and very tasty. Rich in fibre and and they provide instant energy. Making a milkshake or smoothies with fruits is a great way of consuming fruits. This peach milkshake when combined with bananas and a little vanilla ice cream provide a cooling tasty treat!
Peach Milkshake is my favourite way of consuming peaches. These fuzzy fruits always taste best when combined with something. I also make other peach based desserts with like peach and berry crumble which I have already posted. I have also tried peach and berry summer fruit crostata inspired by Ina Garten and also peach pineapple dumpcake.
