Avocados are in vogue and why not. They are very tasty and their health benefits are immense. They are rich in fibre, healthy fats and potassium. Avocados are mainly grown in the Mediterranean region. They are an important part of the Mexican cuisine in the form of guacamole, a staple. In India, they are used in milkshakes and generally referred to as ‘butter fruits’. Avocados have complex flavours – sweetish and soft in texture. They are actually fruits resembling a pear and are generally eaten raw. They are so buttery that oil is extracted from them and used for salad dressings. I love to use them in sandwiches, veg chilli.
Peeling avocados can be tricky business. I illustrate a few easy methods here on how to peel and slice avocados.

Ingredients
  • Ripe Avocado
  • and a spoon, knife
Method
  1. For all methods mentioned below, cut a ripe avocado by running a knife along the avocado
  2. Twist and open up the avocado
  3. Scoop out the seed. Use a spoon
Method 1:
  1. If the avocado is perfectly ripe*, just use the sharp edge of the knife and get under the skin of the avocado and start to pull it off using your hand. It comes off easily and you will have a smooth surface avocado
Method 2:
  1. Sometimes avocados although perfectly ripe the skin can be tough and can stick to the fruit and refuse to peel off. Just use a knife and peel of the skin slowly and it should come off
Method 3:
  1. Use a spoon to scoop off the flesh of the avocado slowly
To slice:
  1. Slice them into half moon shapes or slice them down vertically
Notes
Avocados are also called 'alligator pears' because of their rough green skin and this is the reason some varieties do not peel off easily

*To ripen avocados place them with a bunch of bananas and you will get perfectly ripe avocados everytime

Add lemon/lime juice as soon as you cut avocados as they might turn brownish because of their rich iron content
