Whole wheat veg momos are one of the best snacks ever. They are so light, fresh and tasty. You can keep munching on them and not get bored of them. These whole wheat veg momos are full of fibre and nutrition. They have very less oil added to them.
The fact that these whole wheat veg momos are steamed makes them really healthy and the texture of vegetables remains fresh! Folding momos is an art, a technique which takes years of practice. I make basic attempts to fold momos and they taste great though!
Years ago I had seen live momo making in a restaurant and their hands are magical! Try making these whole wheat veg momos at home!
Try other Indo-Chinese veg recipes from FOI, hakka noodles, roasted gobhi manchurian etc. Enjoy these whole wheat veg momos with homemade chilli tomato momo dipping sauce!
- 1 Cup whole wheat flour
- ¼ Tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp oil
- Water to make dough
- A few drops of sesame oil
- ½ Tbsp oil
- 1 small onion chopped
- 2 spring onion whites
- 1 chopped/grated garlic
- 1" chopped/grated ginger
- Salt to taste
- 1 Cup finely grated/chopped cabbage
- 1 /2 Tsp black pepper
- 1 finely chopped carrot
- 1 finely chopped red chilli or 1 piece chopped finely capsicum
- 1 Tsp soya sauce
- 1 Tsp vinegar
- Spring onion greens
- 1 Tbsp cornflour
- Little water to make paste
- A bamboo basket or steamer or idli cooker
- Few cabbage leaves
- Take whole wheat flour in a bowl
- Sprinkle salt and add oil, mix well
- Pour water slowly and start kneading
- Knead into a soft dough with water, apply oil and let it rest
- Add cornflour into a small bowl, add little water and make a thick paste
- To make stuffing, in a pan, heat oil
- Add chopped spring onion whites and saute, add ginger and garlic and saute
- Next add chopped carrot, chopped/grated cabbage and saute
- Add chopped red chilli, sprinkle black pepper
- Pour soya sauce and vinegar
- Add salt to taste and mix well
- Lastly add spring onion greens. This is the stuffing
- Now let's start making the momos, line bamboo basket with cabbage leaves. Boil water in a large pan
- Pinch small balls off the resting dough
- Roll into a thin round by applying oil
- Place a Tbsp of stuffing in the centre of the rolled sheet
- Start pleating the edges by bringing them together
- Seal the edges with corn flour paste to resemble a potli/modaka
- Brush momos with water
- Place momos in steamer
- Steam momos for 6-8 minutes or till the momos are cooked and have a glaze on top. They can also be steamed in idli cooker
- Serve them hot with chilli momo sauce
Adjust spiciness as per your taste
This is the most basic way of folding momos
Outer covering can also be made of white flour only (maida)
Vegetables should be crunchy, do not over cook them or steam them, stuffing should be relatively dry
Whole Wheat Veg Momos Stepwise:
Take whole wheat flour in a bowl
