This month, March’19 Food Of Interest completes 3 full years. I did post the 1st post on March 4th 2016 but I would like to think March and April 2016 were the founding months of FOI. It laid the foundations, setting up the website, finding a nice format for the posts, easy to read and make recipes, indeed it is a special month! With over 15K users per month I thank my readers for trying my recipes 🙂 So here it is and to make it even more statistically special, the 400th post on FOI, on a sweet note with “Basundi“.

Tubers such as sweet potato, cassava are so underrated. So few takers for these ancient vegetables. But then there is aloo (potato) which came to India through Portuguese about 300 years ago. But we have always had other tubers and root vegetables. These are infact our staples providing essential nutrition in the form of carbohydrates and fibre. So I have come back with a North Karnataka special recipe sihi genasu or sweet potato sweet, translated literally!
Although sweet potatoes look hard they cook very quickly. They have so much taste in them that not much is required to make a nice dish out of it. As with North Karnataka cuisine, we always have simple dishes just like the simple people from the region. Few ingredients and sihi genasu or sweet potato sweet is ready. Til or yellu or sesame is such a wonder ingredient. I am mesmerized with the versatility of this ingredient! It can be used as a base for savoury items like chutneys, gojjus and it can also be used to make sweets. In the Middle East, usage of sesame is on an other level! Tahini used in hummus, sesame halvah and what not! Indian cuisine uses sesame in the most unique ways. Here is one such delicious creation, til khoya ladoo or til ke bugge!

As a kid I was always fascinated by big sweet shops. The idea of tasty, succulent sweets all lined up behind a counter makes one drool isn’t it? Come August we start celebrating different festivals. One of the first ones is to worship the serpent god, nagara chauthi and naga panchmi. It is widely celebrated throughout India. Amidst all the celebrations we generally like to make simple and easy sweets. That is where our age old traditional sweets come to our rescue. In Karnataka we make a simple ladoo with sesame seeds called yellu chigli or til ke ladoo.
Yellu chigli is made with black sesame seeds and jaggery. It is quite easy to make and is one of the most important sweets along with tambittu (roasted chana ladoo). Sesame seeds are fried till they release aroma then mixed with jaggery powder and fresh ghee.
