Banana is my favourite fruit to cook with. You can make so many dishes with it. Every part of the banana plant is edible and in fact we cook with most parts of banana/plantain plant. Ripe banana is such a boon, kids and adults alike like this fruit and the dishes made that are made with it. Banana appam or banana paddu is a traditional favourite at home and we make this for breakfast and for festivals.
The best part of banana appam is it can be made instantly. No waiting long hours for fermentation or no need of kneading any dough. All you need is a paddu/appam pan and when it heating, making the batter. A must have dish, mosaru avalakki for Shri Krishna Janmashtami along with some some fresh butter churned up for ‘muddu’ (beloved) Shri Krishna. Fun snacks offered are such as kodubale, benne muruku, chakli, kobbri mithai, 7 Cups barfi, kalakand. But the most simple and humble dish required on the day is ‘mosaru avalakki’ or dahi poha.
You can choose to add some simple tadka/vaggarne ingredients to make it extra tasty. But in general you can even it keep it plain and quickly mix this up. After eating oily snacks a few spoonfuls of this mosaru avalakki is indeed cooling. Kadhi (paladya) and saaru (rasam) work well in all seasons. I can never say no to a meal involving either of these 2 dishes. It gives you an instant feeling of warmth. Methi kadhi is one of my go-to dishes if I have methi in my fridge and after a long day of work. It is so quick to make and methi definitely makes it extra comforting.
This is Rajasthani style methi kadhi whereas Punjabi style methi kadhi generally has pakodas in it. I have already posted Gujarathi kadhi and Karnataka special majjige huLi. I like to include bright greens mostly in paratha or thepla form. I also include greens in dosa, idli, mixing it with the batter. This time I experimented with Paddu or Gundupongala with spinach, palak paddu.

We always end up looking for ideas for making simple side dishes. Especially mild cooling side dishes always need a lot of thinking. This sorekayi raitha is a nice and easy side dish. It is soothing to the gut and sorekayi/lauki is good for you.
Sorekayi raitha is also called sorekayi hasi majjige huLi. It has all the ingredients a majjige huLi has except chana dal/kadale bele. See the regular Karnataka style majjige huLi recipe.
