Come August we start celebrating different festivals. One of the first ones is to worship the serpent god, nagara chauthi and naga panchmi. It is widely celebrated throughout India. Amidst all the celebrations we generally like to make simple and easy sweets. That is where our age old traditional sweets come to our rescue. In Karnataka we make a simple ladoo with sesame seeds called yellu chigli or til ke ladoo.
Yellu chigli is made with black sesame seeds and jaggery. It is quite easy to make and is one of the most important sweets along with tambittu (roasted chana ladoo). Sesame seeds are fried till they release aroma then mixed with jaggery powder and fresh ghee. Yellu chigli are smaller in size as they should be consumed in small quantities. ... “Yellu Chigli | Til Ke Ladoo | Sesame Seeds Ladoo | Sweet Recipes”
Delicious and special gojju, Karnataka style bendekayi gojju

Gojjus hold a special place in South Indian cuisine. Different regions and states have their own special and unique way of making gojjus. This bendekayi gojju from South Karnataka (Mysore style) is one such tangy and delicious gojju. The combination of flavours sweet, sour and spicy makes a very disliked vegetable like bendekayi/lady’s finger/okra look really good.
Bendekayi gojju can be eaten with chapathis or steamed rice. It is so delicious that it will leave you licking your fingers after eating a meal involving this gojju. As always with bendekayi/okra ensure they are not wet and damp. Wash them overnight, spread them on a kitchen towel and let them air dry. ... “Bendekayi Gojju | Okra Gojju | Gojju Recipes”

Many a time, we ignore simple humble vegetables like bitter gourd. Simply because bitter gourd puts you off owing to its name. Yes, bitter gourd is obviously bitter but when combined with the right masala or ingredients it turns into something entirely different and tasty. Like this haagalkayi gojju or gotsu.
Haagalkayi gojju is a palate cleansing dish. It has aromatic ingredients making it unique tasting. In combination with the bitter gourd tanginess from tamarind pulp and a piece of jaggery makes this haagalkayi gojju get its taste. ... “Haagalkayi Gojju | Bitter Gourd Gojju | Gojju Recipes”

A very popular gravy from North Karnataka, badanekayi rasapalya. It is spicy yet refreshing and tastes best with bhakkri/jolada roti or even regular chapathis or rotis.
Badanekayi rasapalya or brinjal gravy has simple spices like sesame and cinnamon. Their combination makes this gravy loaded with flavours. Tomato and onion makes the base of the gravy nice and thick. Texture-wise this gravy scores a ten on ten in my opinion. ... “Badanekayi Rasapalya | Brinjal Gravy | Gravy Recipes”

Trail Mixes are always fun to eat. A traditional way of celebrating Sankranti/Pongal in Karnataka & Maharashtra is to make yellu-bella or til-gul. Sankranti yellu bella is a mixture of toasted sesame seeds and jaggery pieces. Apart from these ingredients which denote bitter-sweet flavours, roasted groundnuts, roasted gram and pieces of desiccated coconut are also added.
This is the perfect marriage of all flavours depicting the flavours of life. On this occasion of Sankranti make this mixture from scratch at home. With only few days away from Sankranti I thought of posting this recipe for Sankranti yellu bella.
It is more of proportions of all ingredients that need to be added in order to make this mixture well balanced. Most people tend to buy this from grocery stores these days to celebrate Sankranti.
