Gojjus are side dishes to awaken your taste buds. They are spicy, tangy and sweet light gravies usually mixed with a small amount of hot rice or eaten as a side dish with chapathis/rotis. Gojjus can be made using different kinds of vegetables or even fruits. Bitter gourd, cucumber, pineapple, apple, capsicum, fenugreek seeds (methi), sesame seeds(til/yellu) various kinds can be used. Each of these render a special flavour to a gojju. Here’s the recipe for apple gojju.
Unique tasting ingredients are roasted into a masala and then ground up with the spices to make the thick gravy. I have already posted pineapple gojju recipe and here’s the apple gojju recipe. Apple gojju is quite rare but is definitely very tasty as apples have a very sweet unique taste with lot of body and texture.

After a month long celebration of festivals if you are craving to eat something simple and light, try one of the bhaat/rice recipes. Here’s the recipe for a simple gorikayi bhaat made using cluster beans/gorikayi or chavlikayi. These beans are hardly used but when eaten tender they can be very sweet. These beans have a unique taste and are very fibrous. I have also added peas which pop in the mouth and give extra texture along with the crunchy groundnuts/peanuts.
Here’s a simple cluster bean chutney as well to try. Flavours from jaggery and tamarind add the essential sweet and sour notes to this along with rasam powder giving it a hint of spice and fresh taste. I served this with capsicum raitha/saasme. Gorikayi bhaat is a simple one pot recipe, perfect for your lunch box or for festivals or even for that picnic you are planning.

Wish you all a very happy Vijayadashami/Dasara! Coconut holige/kayi obbattu/nariyal poLi is one of my favourite sweets. It is soft yet crunchy on the outside and it has the unmistakable flavour of coconut. Unlike many other dishes where coconut gets lost in between other ingredients, here it is the main ingredient and it gets due importance. Most functions in Karnataka have holige/obbattu/poLi as the main sweet. Usually beLe holige or this kayi holige steal the show and are made in the order of hundreds. They are made with maida/all purpose flour which can make the edges quite hard and the filling inside might not be sufficient to make them soft yet crunchy. I always try and make recipes with whole wheat flour, for the fibre, taste and it makes the holige so much more softer and they hold together beautifully. Gasa-gase or poppy seeds or khus-khus are pungent oil seeds which give a very unique flavour to dishes. It can be added to breads, to gravies or in our very own Karnataka cuisine it is made into a payasa (liquid sweet). It is not as thick as usual payasa/payasams/kheer. It is liquidy and can be consumed as a beverage. Gasa-gase payasa has unique cooling properties, along with the gasa-gase seeds, it has jaggery (bella/gur), cardamom (elaichi), coconut milk (or grated coconut) and milk. It is a must have dessert during festivals in Karnataka. Along with bisi-bele-bhaat this is a delicacy and is consumed warm/cool as a beverage during or after lunch. This dish has a special mention in wiki under Indian cuisine. This is frequently made by my MIL and I learnt this recipe from her. She generally adds desiccated coconut (kobbri/copra), here I have added coconut milk. Sometimes I add grated and ground coconut. The little raisins pop in the mouth when drinking this unique payasa and it tastes great! Seemebadanekayi or chayote squash is a succulent vegetable and it works well in a gravy or curry. They are a great alternative to potatoes as they absorb a lot of flavour. They also cook fairly quickly making this dish fast, easy and simple. Saagu like curries taste great with chapathis/rotis. This also makes an excellent dish for lunch box or for festivals. Another simple, easy to prepare coconut rice/bhaat. Most homes have this dish during a festival or to pack for lunch box. This simple dish can sometimes become boring if prepared very often. Add a spin to it, bring in some festivity, add more flavour of coconut by adding cashewnuts, making it with basmati rice and also using coconut oil to make the tadka. Ganesha Chaturthi is a 3 or 5 or 10 day long festival for some people. If you celebrate Ganesha Chaturthi for more than one day, it is mandatory to make at least one sweet dish as offering/naivedya to Lord Ganesha. After making sweets like holige (poli), kadubu or other traditional ones from sweets list one will need a recipe that is simple, easy and light on the stomach. Haalbai is one such recipe, soaked rice ground into a thick batter with coconut milk lightly flavoured with elaichi it is a super easy sweet to make. It does not need resting time after preparing. Just plan to soak rice a few hours before making this sweet. Only water can also be used in place of coconut milk but coconut milk adds a subtle taste and makes haalbai pliable because of the oils in it. In traditional South Indian cuisine it is customary to have a balance of all flavours when eating a meal, especially a big meal on a festival or in big spreads like in weddings. A pickle and a palate cleansing gojju are the most important dishes to get a balance of all the flavours. Gojju is like a curry but thicker and is served in small quantities as a little side dish to eat with hot rice. When we make gojju at home, it is often served as a side dish with chapathi or akki rotis(rice flour rotis). Pineapple gojju has a very festive taste to it with all the different spices, fruity, sweet and sour flavour of pineapple. Gojju/gotsu need not have a lot of oil added to it to make it tasty but it has to be mildly spiced and made into the right consistency. Bele Holige or obbattu is one of the most filling and delicious sweets. It is a sweet dal stuffed poli/holige. During a festival or a function we all look for one dish that can feed a big crowd which is also filling. Sweets generally are accessories in a big spread. Yes, preparing bele holige or obbattu is effort but when you have mastered the process of making the dal filling then preparing bele holige or obbattu will be easy especially if you have a few people to assist/work with you.
I have used whole wheat flour/atta for the outer covering dough whereas generally all purpose flour (maida) and chiroti rava (fine rava) are used to prepare the dough along with a pinch of turmeric. I prefer whole wheat flour(learnt it from my mother), holige turn out to be soft and do not become stretchy and chewy when they are kept for a while.

Dosa/Dose is a very popular dish from South India eaten for breakfast. But these days, dosa has become an universal dish. It is famous all over the world and not just in India. This is a crowd puller dish and is one of the most prepared dishes in weddings and other parties along with bisi bele bhaat. You will definitely see a crowd around a dosa counter wherever it is, in parties, in dosa camps, in hotels, in street dosa vans which sell “99”, “100” and many more varieties of dosas. With the same batter you can make different variety of dosas. Masala dosa has potato (aloo) masala palya filling with red chutney (kempu chutney) smeared just before adding the masala. Red chutney is substituted with green mint/pudina chutney sometimes.
