Simple everyday roti and sabzi with some dal is easy to make and easy to eat. Homemade food any day, is the best! Aloo, gobhi, matar, baingan and karela are very important vegetables in North India. They form the base of so many everyday sabzi. A good number of these combinations work really well together, aloo baingan, aloo matar palak. This time it is gobhi and matar’s turn, to make a tasty gobhi matar sabzi.
While choosing cauliflower ensure it does not look yellow or does not have brown spots. It should be firm and white and make sure to check in between the stalks for any small worms or impurities. If gobhi is groown organically even better. Your gobhi matar sabzi will be fresh and tasty. This sabzi can be made for lunch box or for a simple weekend lunch. Pulao is my go to one-pot dish for lunch or sometimes for dinner. Usually gets ready in a jiffy and some raitha on the side, you are set. Making an elaborate pulao will not be possible always. But making use of the same masalas and may be just 1 or 2 vegetables we can still make a delicious pulao. Carrot pulao is one of those simple pulaos you can make.

Yummy veg fried rice with bright coloured stir fried vegetables

Back with another street food from FOI. This time it’s an Indo-Chinese dish, street style veg fried rice. Along with pav bhaji this used to be my favourite dishes to order in canteens near my college. A platter of gobhi manchurian to share with friends, the perfect combo! This time I made paneer manchurian to serve with veg fried rice. It also tastes delicious with veggies in hot gravy sauce. I have posted a few pictures below from another time.
For me the hit of this dish, veggies of course but it is freshly pounded black pepper which adds the distinct taste. It brings out the flavour of all the veggies and the slightly burnt taste gives it an unique flavour.

Hot huLi a.k.a sambar with rice is a staple in most households in South India. Different regions of course have different ways of making sambar. Varieties of sambar with different vegetables are made. Each type of sambar is different as the masala added varies and vegetables render a special flavour of their own. Mangalore southekayi huli or sambar is a specialty from the Mangalore, Malnad and Udupi regions of Karnataka.
Soft Mangalore southekayi simmered in coconut masala and dal mixture is a super combination. Mixed with hot steamed rice and some ghee on top is a match made in heaven. Mangalore cucumber/southekayi is a cucumber variety grown in Malnad region and it has a very unique taste and texture. A simple dal-chawal can sometimes be very boring. But if you can bring some life into your chawal by adding some fresh/frozen green peas and cooked till the peas/matar turn soft and bright green.
