Serves: 2-3 people
- 3-4 diced tomatoes
- ¼ cup puthani/roasted gram/huri gadale
- 2 Tbsp grated or diced coconut
- 5-6 whole black pepper
- ½ Tsp jeera
- ½ green chilli
- 1 red chilli broken
- A pinch of hing
- Few curry leaves
- 2-3 sprigs of coriander with stalks
- Salt to taste
- 1 Tsp ghee
- ½ Tsp saasuve/mustard
- 1 pinch hing
- 1 small broken red chilli
- Wash, remove stalk and dice the tomatoes
- In a mixer jar add huri gadale, green chilli and red chilli
- Tear up curry leaves and coriander leaves and add to the jar
- Next add coconut pieces and throw in the black pepper
- Pour about ½ Cup water, add salt to taste and grind into a smooth paste
- Add this puree into a pan, add ½ Cup water
- Adjust consistency and bring to a boil
- Once the saaru or rasam starts to thicken boil for a further 2-3 minutes
- Make tadka with ghee, mustard, hing and red chilli, pour over saaru
- Garnish with coriander
- Serve hot with plain steamed rice and ghee!
Adjust spiciness as per your taste
You can also add some homemade rasam powder for extra fragrance
Ensure that the tomatoes are ripe yet firm
