Dal Tadka

Any day a simple dal is comforting and soothing. Dal tadka is the most commonly made type of dal in most households. Different states in India have different ways of making dal tadka. Each one is unique and really tasty. This dal tadka recipe is a simple home style recipe with all basic ingredients found at home!
Usually togari bele/toor dal also known as arhar dal or pigeon pea dal is used to make dal tadka. It has a super sweet taste and cooks very well and melts in your mouth. It blends with all masala really well and it can be made very quickly. Pressure cook dal, meanwhile make the masala and then do the honours by adding an aromatic tadka on top.


This dal tadka tastes best with some phulka and some peas pulao. And it always feels fancy when infact is a simple meal that can be made in no time. Ingredients
  • ½ Cup toor-dal/togaribele
  • 1 Tbsp desi-ghee/cooking-oil
  • ¾ Tsp jeera/cumin
  • 1 finely chopped green chilli
  • 2 cloves finely chopped garlic
  • 1" piece finely chopped ginger
  • 1 tomato
  • Salt to taste
For Tadka:
  • ½ Tbsp ghee/cooking-oil
  • ½ Tsp mild kashmiri red chilli powder
Method
  1. In a vessel, take toor-dal/togaribele, rinse it under water
  2. Add 2 Cups of water and pressure-cook for 4-5 whistles
  3. Mash the dal and keep aside
  4. In a pan, heat desi-ghee/cooking-oil, add jeera and allow it to splutter
  5. Drop in the chopped green chilli, ginger and garlic
  6. Saute on low flame till raw smell of garlic disappears
  7. Pour this tadka over the dal
  8. Add salt to taste and bring dal to simmer
  9. Grind 1-2 tomatoes into a paste
  10. Pour this over the simmering dal
  11. Lastly, heat little more desi-ghee/cooking-oil in a pan, add red chilli powder and turn off flame
  12. Pour this second tadka over the dal. Serve hot!
Notes
Add a pinch of turmeric when the dal is cooking for a nice colour

Adjust green chillies as per your taste

You can also choose to finely chop the tomatoes and saute with ginger-garlic tadka and then add to dal

Dal Tadka Stepwise:
In a vessel, take toor-dal/togaribele, rinse it under water
  
Add 2 Cups of water and pressure-cook for 4-5 whistles
 
Mash the dal and keep aside

In a pan, heat desi-ghee/cooking-oil, add jeera and allow it to splutter

Drop in the chopped green chilli, ginger and garlic
   
Saute on low flame till raw smell of garlic disappears

Pour this tadka over the dal

Add salt to taste and bring dal to simmer

Grind 1-2 tomatoes into a paste
 
Pour this over the simmering dal

Lastly, heat little more desi-ghee/cooking-oil in a pan, add red chilli powder and turn off flame

Pour this second tadka over the dal. Serve hot!
